COIL successfully completed!
A COIL is a collaborative online international learning project.
26/02/2024
Since October 2023, Luciano Aguirre Paez (ITBA, Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Henrike Weiden (HM) had jointly lectured on data governance and legal implications of multilateral data-driven business models. This way, students from both universities benefited from interdisciplinary studies during the entire semester. Not only did the mixed ITBA-HM teams attend lectures together and applied their learnings to their own business ideas. But they also worked on their projects complementarily during the semester.
In February, 2024, the COIL culminated in a workshop on ITBA premises in Buenos Aires. Here, the student teams merged all their insights, ITBA students took into account data governance and data ethics, HM students added aspects of the projects' legal feasibility under EU law. The results: Six innovative business models, for which each a specific data governance and legal framework has been set. Some day, we might see some of these projects on the market. Plus personal bonds among students, which are meant to last.
What HM students say:
"Before we started with the workshop, some of us took advantage of flying to South America and spent some time exploring the Salta region in Argentina. Another group visited the extraordinary carneval festivities in Rio de Janeiro.
We all agreed that the whole COIL cooperation finalized in Buenos Aires was one of the most enriching experiences we had thanks to our university so far. We could explore the way how universities work on the other side of the globe and learn about cultural differences. Additionally, we were lucky to see a graduation of one of our Argentinian team members, who was "rewarded" by eggs, flour, mate and foam spray shower right in front of the university.
I believe we will all benefit from the workshop as well as from the welcoming and open minded attitude of our Argentinian colleagues. With some of them we spent plenty of time beyond the workshop. Thanks to them we did not feel like tourists in the beautiful city of Buenos Aires anymore."

"My experience in Buenos Aires as part of the COIL project was exceptional. I was not only impressed by the colourful, vibrant and beautiful city, but also by the hospitality of our Argentinian COIL project partners. I will always remember my COIL project experience in Buenos Aires as a wonderful and exceptional academical and personal experience. I am delighted and proud to be part of COIL 2024 HM and ITBA.
Thanks to our intensive work on the project in the run-up to the workshop, we then only had the task of discussing our results and working out critical / particularly interesting points concerning the overlap between data governance and legal issues in data-driven business. I have the feeling that this workshop gave our business model the final important polish.
Such projects are the basis and fundamental for academic, international co-operation. The Munich University of Applied Sciences stands out for me personally because of such an opportunity. The international project was also one of the initial reasons for me to study for a Master's degree at Munich University of Applied Sciences."
